Quan Yin (also spelled Kwan Yin, Kuanyin, Guanyin) is known in Buddhism as the Goddess of Mercy and Compassion. She is the embodiment of the divine feminine. Yin is the feminine energetic force balanced with the masculine Yang energetic force. Quan Yin is a popular deity for Kauai residents as the island itself is the embodiment of feminine energy.
She is depicted riding atop a cloud. A dragon, whose tail serpentines up the entire back of the statue sits at her feet looking upward. The dragon's symbolic meanings including: wisdom, Yang, strength, divine powers, primal forces, and transformation.
Kwan Yin holds a vase containing the water of life that has the power to eliminate the suffering of humanity. She is clothed in flowing robes and wears a necklace known as "the pearls of enlightenment." The lotus flower near her feet is a symbol of purity.
