Poi Pounders, or Pohaku Ku'i Poi, Was used by the Polynesian people to pound cooked Kalo (taro root) into poi. Poi was the main Staple of the Hawaiian people. Much like corn to the Native Americans Kalo was Sacred, according to the Kumulipo The Hawaiian Creation chant Kalo came from the firstborn son of Wakea (Sky Father) and Papa (Mother Earth), who was stillborn and buried. From this site grew the Kalo plant which was one of the canoe plants brought from Polynesia to Hawaii. With over 300 Cultivation's of Kalo grown in every Ahupuaa (Pie-shaped land division of each island. defined by the natural watersheds.) each ahupuaa would cultivate different varieties adapted for each elevation and moisture. divided into 2 major classifications wetland and Mala (dry land) taro. wetland Varieties were grown in lo'i like in the fields of Hanalei where 73% of Hawaii's taro is grown.
