Hawaiian Razorback Boar "Il Porcellino"

The Porcellino replica - looks strikingly like the Hawaiian Razorback Boar, at rest. This unique cast-concrete statue stands out in the garden acting as a guardian of the east, often startling visitors with its life-like qualities.  It is as if you've happened upon a real creature!  Not only is it an intriguing addition to your garden, it has a vast and fascinating history.

A recreation of the Porcellino or the Boar of Florence created as a Calydonian Boar, was originally cast in bronze by baroque master Pietro Tacca before 1634 in Rome. The original is found only in Florence. 

It is said that facing the Porcellino to the east will usher the dawn light. This whimsical creature is thought to be good luck and can be spotted in such films as Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002),  Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part II (2011), Light in the Piazza (1962), and Hannibal (2001).

We know of 15 replicas world-wide and we are lucky to house one of those at Garden Ponds Nursery on Kaua'i, Hawai'i. It is said to be an assurance of safe passage on your journey if you place a coin in his gaping mouth and rub his snout for good luck.
